Spring is here, and it’s likely your life may need a spring cleaning. Sweep out the bad habits and bring in some healthy habits for the new year. Literally decluttering your space and figuratively cleaning up your mindset can do wonders for your habits this year.

Tips to Spring Clean Your Life:

1. Declutter your surroundings. If you spend a lot of time in your car, at your desk at work, or in your home office then take time to clean out those spaces. As clutter builds up, you may feel more stress due to your environment. Also, clean up the area next to your bed. Cleaning up what you see first things in the morning can reduce stress. Decluttering can reduce anxiety and even improve family relationships.

2. Add white space to your morning. We often start the day looking at the news or scrolling through social media. Instead of having an outside source influence your first thoughts, add white space to your morning and choose an activity that will give you energy. Ideas include stretching, journaling, meditating, walking, yoga, or playing an instrument. My husband enjoys playing banjo in the morning, and our cat Luna likes to join him.

3. Add joy to your workouts. With the improvement in weather, take advantage of sunny days and go outside to do an activity you enjoy. Ideas include walking, playing basketball, hiking, or jumping rope. You can add exercise movements when you do yardwork such as squats, a lap around the yard, or even a plank. On rainy days, walk up and down your stairs, walk laps around your house, or do burpees in the living room. When you do laundry, put away each item individually. Add your favorite music, and you may even start to enjoy laundry!

4. Clean up your diet. You may find that unhealthy foods have made their way into your refrigerator and pantry. Take time to throw out any junks foods or unhealthy beverages that are in your home. Then clean up your grocery list and include healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, lean meats, and low fat dairy products. Fill your refrigerator and pantry with healthy foods. Plan meals and snacks with healthy foods to fuel your mind and body.

You can spring clean your life. Take steps today to make 2021 your best year yet!
