Wade on the Trail with his dog

QC Outdoors blogger Wade Ellett reviews a historic gem of a park located in Dubuque, just an hour’s drive north from the metro Quad City area.

If you’ve ever driven north from the QC during the fall, you’ve seen how gorgeous the views are!

Many destinations beckon, but Eagle Point Park is one of the most historic, charming and fun.

Established in 1908, Eagle Point attracted so many visitors that it eventually merited streetcar service. The half-mile Trolley Line Trail follows the streetcar route. Today the site of the original waiting station hosts the giant eagle statue and gardens.

The buildings and landscape architecture are spectacular!

In the 1930s, Eagle Point benefited from a grant from the Works Progress Administration, which created beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright-type architecture and gardens throughout the park.

The Terrance Room, Veranda Rooms, Indian Room, and Bridge Complex were built during that era, while the Riverfront Pavilion was built in 1910.

While there, be sure to use the viewing towers, where you can see Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin at the same time.

Many modern amenities – including playgrounds, restrooms, a walking path, a fish pond, and more – will keep you and your family walking, playing, and enjoying yourselves for hours. It’s well worth the $1.00 entrance fee.

Don’t forget to pack a lunch!
