Let’s Move Quad Cities celebrates the spirit and determination Quad City area residents take to promote movement and fitness. We welcome guest bloggers, Michelle Glazier and the Geneseo Jazzercise Instructor Team. For 32 years they have been sharing the joy of fitness with others.

Doing it for the Health of It!

Meet the 13 motivating instructors of the Geneseo Jazzercise Premier Fitness Center team who are colleagues, friends and an inspiration to hundreds of their clients every week. We talked with Michelle Glazier, Geneseo, who brought Jazzercise to Geneseo in 1983. In the Quad Cities there is also a premier Jazzercise Center in East Moline and new Jazzercise center at Duck Creek, Davenport.

Tell us about your team’s journey to fitness:

I opened a Jazzercise Center in Geneseo in 1983. I was an athlete and cheerleader in high school. I also cheered at Augustana. I always worked out but wanted to find exercise I enjoyed. My friend opened a Jazzercise in Moline. I tried it and from that class in 1982, I never missed another class. I fell in love with the program. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I was meant to teach Jazzercise, so I opened the Geneseo studio a year later. I started with 3 classes a week and one instructor and today we have 45 classes a week and 13 instructors! Several of us started in our early 20’s and continue teaching to this day. We all came to fitness for a different reason but one thing that is common is our desire to share the joy of fitness with others!

When and why did the team build the Geneseo Jazzercise organization?

The company Jazzercise started in 1969 founded by Judi Sheppard Missett! Jazzercise came to the Quad Cities in the early 1980’s. Jazzercise continues to be the #1 Aerobic Dance Fitness program in the world. With Jazzercise offered in all 50 states and 35 foreign countries, you are sure to get the same quality workout wherever you go!

What is the best part about teaching Jazzercise?

The best part of teaching Jazzercise is connecting with our customers and helping them reach their fitness goals! Some of our customers have been coming to Geneseo for more than 20 years. They have become more than customers, but also friends. We are a family because we are together every day. We see them so much. We’ve seen them have and raise their children. I even taught up to the day my own kids were born, so they’ve watched my two sons grow up, too.

Are there any memorable moments or stories that make your jobs worth it?

We have several memorable moments that make our job worth it! One of the most recent would be two current customers who were battling breast cancer and continued to Jazzercise through radiation. Customer #1 actually lost almost 90 lbs on her Jazzercise journey. We hear success stories daily how Jazzercise has helped with different areas of our customer’s lives! Our pregnant Instructor who was just recently certified to teach Jazzercise, had to rely on insulin during her first two pregnancies. She is now half way through her third pregnancy she has not needed insulin, thanks to her workouts.

Does everyone teach full-time or do the instructors have day jobs? What do you all do when you’re not working out?

We all work full-time or at least part time besides our Jazzercise classes we teach. Several of us have small children; we even have one instructor pregnant right now! When we’re not working out, we enjoy reading, shopping, and many other physical activities such as bicycling, snow skiing, and jogging as well! Many of our instructors are also schoolteachers who love to teach. They teach classes before and after school to fit Jazzercise in their schedules. Four of my instructors have been with me over 20 years. These instructors are very special — as the 12 of them are my best friends and my sisters. They are truly a big part of my life. We have a special connection.

What would you say to someone who has a hard time getting motivated to work out?

Working out is really not about ‘getting skinny’ any more; it’s a way of leading a healthy life. It’s the feeling you get after a good workout that inspires our customers to be consistent and stay motivated! One of our favorite sayings is, “If exercise could be put in a pill, it’d be the most prescribed medicine today!” We truly “do it” for the health of it! If you’re looking for a workout that is fun, yet effective, then Jazzercise is for you. The hour flies by, you’re dancing, sweating, doing bicep curls, leg lifts, stretching and then the hour is over! We combine everything you need for a well-rounded workout in one hour!
